- El diplomático se reunió con el alcalde, miembros del equipo de gobierno y otros ciudadanos del Reino Unido residentes en el municipio
El municipio de San Fulgencio recibió ayer con orgullo al embajador del Reino Unido en España, Hugh Elliott. La visita, como resultado de una invitación realizada durante el verano, tenía como objetivo presentar al embajador una de las zonas de España elegidas por un importante número de nacionales del Reino Unido como su hogar, así como destacar algunos de los proyectos realizados por ellos en las urbanizaciones.
Como explicó el alcalde, José Sampere: “San Fulgencio es uno de los municipios con mayor población empadronada procedente del Reino Unido, con cerca de 3.000 de los 8.000 del padrón municipal. Es un gran honor para nosotros recibir al embajador británico para reconocer la contribución que los nacionales del Reino Unido han hecho a nuestro municipio durante más de 30 años, y demuestra la cooperación que existe entre nuestros dos países”.
El alcalde recibió al diplomático, acompañado de la cónsul británica en Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris, en la entrada del Ayuntamiento donde, tras un breve recorrido por el edificio y la firma formal del Libro de Firmas, se mostró a los invitados el último vídeo promocional, así como la forma en que el pueblo de San Fulgencio se unió tras la DANA de septiembre de 2019. Al acto también asistió Antonia Moreno, delegada del Consell en la provincia de Alicante.
El embajador también tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con los dos concejales británicos, Samantha Hull y Darren Parmenter, sobre algunos de los temas actuales que afectan a los nacionales del Reino Unido, especialmente la residencia y los permisos de conducir. San Fulgencio es el único municipio de España que cuenta con dos ediles británicos que forman parte del equipo de gobierno.
El concejal de Relaciones Internacionales, Darren Parmenter, dijo: “Estoy encantado de que el embajador haya podido aceptar mi invitación para visitar San Fulgencio, ya que sé que esto no ocurre a menudo. Estoy orgulloso de que este municipio haya sido, y siga siendo, una elección popular de los ciudadanos británicos, tanto como turistas como residentes. Tener no uno, sino dos nacionales del Reino Unido como parte del equipo de gobierno demuestra el compromiso que tiene San Fulgencio con la integración de un número importante de la población”.
La delegación también visitó la urbanización, donde conoció el proyecto ‘Men Shed’ para la interacción social y la promoción de la artesanía, junto con el ‘Jardín de la Reflexión’. Este último es un lugar al que todos los residentes y visitantes pueden acudir para recordar a sus familiares y seres queridos fallecidos.
Tras la visita, el embajador declaró estar “orgulloso y encantado de ver la tremenda contribución que tantos británicos están haciendo en sus comunidades, y quiero agradecer al pueblo de San Fulgencio por hacernos sentir como en casa”.
British Ambassador pays visit to San Fulgencio for the first time in its history

The municipality of San Fulgencio proudly welcomed yesterday the UK Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott. The visit, as a result of an invitation made during the summer, was aimed at introducing the Ambassador to one of the areas of Spain chosen by a significant number UK nationals as their home, as well as highlighting some of the projects undertaken by them in the Urbanisations.
As the mayor, José Sampere, explained: “San Fulgencio is one of the municipalities with the largest population of registered inhabitants from the United Kingdom, accounting for around 3,000 of the 8,000 on the municipal census. It is a great honour for us to welcome the British Ambassador to acknowledge the contribution UK nationals have made to our municipality for over 30 years, and demonstrates the cooperation that exists between both our countries”.
The mayor welcomed the diplomat, accompanied by the British Consul for Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris at the entrance to the Town Hall where, following a short tour of the building and the formal signing of the Libro de Firmas, the guests were shown the latest promotional video as well as the way the people of San Fulgencio came together in the aftermath of the DANA in September 2019. The guests also included Antonia Moreno, regional representative from the autonomic government in Alicante.
The Ambassador also had the opportunity of talking to the two British councillors, Samantha Hull and Darren Parmenter, about some of the current issues affecting UK nationals, especially residency and driving licences. San Fulgencio is the only municipality in Spain with two British councillors forming part of the Equipo de Gobierno.
Councillor for International Relations, Darren Parmenter, said: “I am delighted the Ambassador was able to accept my invitation to visit San Fulgencio as I know this isn’t something that happens often. I’m proud that this municipality has been, and continues to be, a popular choice of UK nationals both as tourists and residents. Having not one, but two, UK nationals as part of the governing team shows the commitment San Fulgencio has to integration with a significant number of the population.”
The delegation also visited the Urbanisation where they visited the ‘Men Shed’ project for social interaction and promotion of crafts, together with the ‘Garden of Reflection’. The latter is a place for all residents and visitors to go to remember their deceased relatives and loved ones.
Following the visit, the Ambassador stated that “I am proud and delighted to see the tremendous contribution so many British people are making to their communities and I want to thank the town of San Fulgencio for making us feel so at home here”.
