San Fulgencio invests more than 280,000 euros in improving the municipality’s sports facilities

  • The works will allow the installation of artificial turf on the football pitch in the urbanisation and a tennis court in the town centre thanks to two grants

San Fulgencio Town Council has announced the start of the renovation and improvement of several sports infrastructures in the municipality. This has been indicated by the Councillor for Sports, Ana Maria Villena, who has reported that “these are interventions that we believe necessary to bring and facilitate the practice of sports to the citizens of San Fulgencio”. The work, which will be carried out both in the urbanisation and in the town centre, will be funded through two grants from the Provincial Council of Alicante; the ‘+ Cerca’ plan and the ‘+ Deporte’ plan, with a total investment of 285,018 euros.

As reported by the councillor for Works and Services from the town centre, Francisco Molero, the work “will consist of the installation of artificial turf on both the 8-a-side football pitch in the urbanisation area and on one of the tennis courts in the sports centre in the town centre”. In this way, the surfaces of these two playing fields will be renewed, as well as the perimeter fencing of the tennis court “to reach a height of two metres, which will allow a better development of the matches and will avoid inconveniences in terms of the loss of balls and the passing of other players”. The existing posts and nets on the tennis court will also be renewed, along with the installation of a rugby goal on the football pitch, to be used for training in this sport.

Included as an improvement in this project, consideration has also been given to the construction of a training ground for cricket, a ball game in which two teams of eleven players play against each other, with one team batting and trying to get runs, while the other team tries to stop them. This is a very popular practice among the British population, “which is why we have considered setting up this training ground to make it easier for anyone who wants to play it,” explained Samantha Hull, councillor for Works and Services from the urbanization area. In addition, “we have a player from San Fulgencio in the national team of this sport, so it will be useful when it comes to carrying out their training,” she said. The pitch will be located next to the football pitch of the urbanisation sports centre, and will cover an area of around 60 square metres.

For his part, the mayor of the municipality, José Sampere, has indicated that “we are carrying out the conditioning of these outdoor areas so that the citizens can make use of them with all the possible comfort and safety”. Sampere also stated that “the San Fulgencio Town Council will continue to work to improve the necessary sports facilities so that they can be enjoyed by the population”.
